INVENTORY CHALLENGES - By Joel Hershey (Published in PEI Journal) - May 2009

Since the beginning of retail gasoline facilities in the United States, petroleum marketers haves struggled to keep close tabs on all aspects of their petroleum inventory – not only is in their tanks, but also what is at the racks, what is being transported and delivered, and ultimately what gets dispensed or sold to the consumer. So why is inventory so difficult to track? One would think it’s just simple math, but it’s not that easy. There are several challenges to obtaining good inventory information. Helping your customer understand and overcome them will make you a valued partner.

STICK READING
Beginning with data acquisition, many marketers determine how much products they have in their current inventory by sticking or gauging their tanks. This typically is done by the store clerk who “sticks” the tank daily with a dipstick and hopes the readings are accurate because he or she is using a good stick and is consistently reading to within one-eighth of an inch for recording purposes. If the stick is slightly bent from one reading to the other, a discrepancy will occur. Factor in the possibility of different store personnel performing this task, inclement weather (Have you ever tried to stick a tank when it’s raining out?) or the possible use of the wrong tank charts, and the store owner is left with the start of a problem that contributes to the slippery slope of inaccurate inventory measurement. BUSINESS WEST ARTICLE- "All Stuffed Up" July 2008

Mold, bacteria, skin cells, dirt…these are the things we’re breathing in varying levels every day. The picture may appear grim, but the prognosis may not be as bad as we think – and further, remedies to make indoor air quality a little better are available, starting as simply as a run down the hall with a dust mop.

It’s called stachybotrys, and by some accounts, it’s the stuff of horror movies. Dubbed ‘toxic’, ‘black’, or ‘killer’ mold, stachybotrys has been the subject of frightening new reports concerning deathly ill children, businessmen with major memory loss, and families fleeing their homes with nothing but the clothes on their backs after discovering the greenish –black substance in their walls or floors.   NEW BUILDING - Tampa, FL January 2008

January 21, 2008 was a big day for our Tampa , Florida personnel. After months of planning and construction, they moved into their brand-new office building located at 421 Hobbs Street , just around the corner from their former spot.

The 15,400 square foot building contains 5,100 square feet of warehouse space, and is situated on 1.09 acres. Tilt-wall construction was used to erect the shell of the building in just three days.

Major design considerations include ambient light from skylights and clear story windows on the upper façade, tree-lined southern exposure, and various characteristics that make the new office LEED Green Building Certifiable. The carpeting throughout the space is actually made from recycled soda bottles! Other noteworthy features include low VOC cabinetry, low water use fixtures, a high efficiency HVAC system, low energy lighting, and motion sensors and timer switches throughout the building.

We're proud of this new building and would love to show you its progression through photos.VIEW PHOTOS...

BUSINESS WEST ARTICLE- "Where Business and the Environment Converge" Oct 2007

Mark Hellstein started Environmental Compliance Services in his parents’ basement, armed with little more than a shovel, a pickup truck, and a solid understanding of new regulations regarding what companies could and couldn’t put into the air, ground, and water. What he’s learned through 25 years in business is that knowledge of the regs isn’t nearly enough to succeed in this highly competitive sector; one must also know how to partner with clients to find practical, economical solutions. Mark Hellstein remembers back to the mid-’80s, when he was reading cover stories in Inc. magazine and other publications about how environmental compliance was going to be among the hottest sectors for entrepreneurs looking for opportunities.

He was intrigued, of course, because he was already in that business — sort of. “I was two steps ahead of the game,” he recalled with a laugh, adding quickly that while he did, indeed, predict some business opportunities arising from a slew of environmental protection measures passed in the late ’70s, his entry into the field was more chance, or serendipity, to use his word, than it was entrepreneurial instinct or brilliance. He was part of a team at Hamilton Standard, working on a project, funded by the Environmental Protection Agency to develop new industrial pretreatment standards, when the funding was discontinued by the recently installed Reagan administration. He left Hamilton Standard in the summer of 1981 to “do my own thing,” as he put it, which turned out to be several years of hard struggle while trying to get a venture called Environmental Compliance Services Inc., then doing business out of his parents’ basement, off the ground.
