Upcoming Courses:
The Post-Glacial Landscape: Pioneer Valley and Surroundings
March 7, 2012 • 8:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
10 State Street, Woburn, MA
4 credit hours • $225
This course has been approved by the LSP Board (course #1435) and the LEP Board (course # 318).
Participants in this course will learn to effectively interpret a surficial geologic map while armed with an understanding of the genetic processes behind glacial landforms and their compromising sediments. Their refined knowledge, in conjunction with online resources, will enable course takers to effectively understand the soils and stratigraphy of a site before proceeding with intrusive subsurface investigation. The instructors will give special attention to hydraulic properties of various sediments and implications for contaminant transport therein. This will be a hands-on course where participants spend equal time listening as well as doing.
We recommend taking this course first if you plan to take the 8 hour field course in April and you do not already have training in glacial geology. Please contact Brian Yellen (byellen AT ecsconsult.com) if you are interested in taking this course.

Field Course on Connecticut River Valley's Post-Glacial Landscape
April 27, 2012 • 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
296 Nonotuck Street, Florence, MA
8 credit hours • $400
This course has been approved by the LSP Board (course #1436) and the LEP Board (course # 319).
Participants in this course will visit a series of glacial depositional landscapes in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts. At each stop, participants will build on their understanding of how glaciers shaped the landscape and what overburden materials to expect in different contexts. The instructors will give special attention to hydraulic properties of various sediments and implications for contaminant transport therein.
Wear boots and appropriate clothing for wet terrain. Moderate hiking is required for this course. Call Brian Yellen (413-233-9318) for more details if you are concerned about the level of physical activity required.
Prerequisite: Participation in "The Post-Glacial Landscape," four-hour classroom course is highly recommended but not essential.

About the Instructors
Brian Yellen (MS, MEdT) earned a master of science degree at UMass Amherst in hydrogeology as well as a master of teaching degree from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. His research has taken him as far away as Svalbard to study active glacial processes as well as to more local terrains to understand how dam-controlled rivers interact with glacial sediments. Brian was awarded UMass Amherst's Distinguished Teaching Award in 2010, awarded to two graduate students annually at the university.
Dan Felten (PE, LSP, LEP) has almost three decades of experience in environmental- and energy-related consulting, contracting and remediation. His project experience includes all facets of environmental assessment and remediation for petroleum and solvent releases, compliance/permitting for petroleum and industrial facilities, inspection of aboveground and underground storage tanks, and the design and installation of ground source geothermal systems. Dan is also an adjunct professor at Greenfield Community College in Greenfield, MA in the Alternative Energy Program.
